Restorative yoga is the most heavenly, divine gift you could give yourself each week to encourage optimum health and clarity of mind.
The poses in Restorative Yoga are adapted from supine, inverted or seated yoga postures and invite us to relax, renew, restore and recharge body and mind. Props such as soft bolsters (large and small), sand bags, blankets, chairs and eye bags are used to support the body so that you can hold the poses for longer and relax, allowing you to open your body through passive stretching in a symmetrical way. Participants will be guided to a gentle awareness of the breath in order to encourage deeper introspection, thus detaching from the constant stimulation in the world around us. This is a great way to heal and realign the body and mind.
Taking time out to relax and renew is essential to living a well balanced life, especially considering that stress is the main contributor to illness and injury. To relax is to rest deeply, different to sleep but similar in that it involves no movement, no effort and the brain becomes quiet. Restorative Yoga can be described as active relaxation. By supporting the body with props we alternately stimulate and relax the body to move towards balance, creating specific physiological responses that are beneficial to health and can reduce the effects of stress.
